How the Cebu Fleet was formed
PP Sven – Olof Tengelin visited in September 2008 a Rotary Meeting in his hometown Gothenburg Sweden. The Guest Speaker was Member of the International Yachting Fellowship (IYFR) in Sweden. Interested and inspired by the speaker he asked how to become a Member of IYFR and weather there is any IYFR in the Philippines.
PP Sven gave his e-mail address to the speaker and soon after he received the e-mail address of Jun Avecilla Squadron Commander from the Cubao Squadron.
In December SQC Jun Avecilla and SQVC Max Tan had a business trip to Cebu, an opportunity to PP Sven to meet the two businessmen.
As Guest Speakers they introduced the Cubao Squadron and IYFR to the Rotary Club of Mactan.
On March 18, 2009 PP Sven became Charter Member of the newly chartered Cubao Fleet. His mission from FC Jun Avecila – Go back to Cebu and start a Squadron IYFR Club.
Mariner Sven highly motivated, back in Cebu started to bring his vision into reality. He got great support from the Rotarians of his Club which helped him to advertise the noble idea of fellowship and camaraderie. Soon after, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Mactan, Central Mactan, Cebu South and Metro Mandaue 2006 came together to charter the Mactan Squadron on May 22, 2009 at Kontiki Resort and Restaurant in Maribago, Mactan. The Carter of the Mactan Squadron was done by FC Jun Avecilla and FVC Max Tan in the presence of AG Maita Manglapus and Pres. Dra. Caridad Labe, both from RC Mactan and Pres. David Poley Pres. of RC Central Mactan who did also sign up the same day.
10 of the 11 Members were inducted led by SQC Sven – Olof Tengeling. Bridge Udo Pelkowski Vice Cmndr, Aki Zapanta Secretary, Jun Merado Treasurer, Eric Roijen, Tony Salvo, Yngve “Mike” Kjekkgren, Wolfgang Pichler, Steve Huseby, Kenneth Sotto and Fernando Manglapus. Gary Randell has been on vacation in his home country USA.
Shortly after the charter SQC Sven handed over the leadership of the Squadron to next in charge SQVC Udo Pelkowski, due to his temporary assignment on MT Bro Alexandre a 49.599 tons double bottom tanker.
To accomplish the common dream of becoming the Cebu Fleet and to undertake prestigious projects the Mactan Squadron performed weekly meetings in the month of July bringing up the membership to 18 and performing 2 projects. A Fellowship Boating on July 05, 2009 were we had the rare opportunity to see a school of Dolphins and our support of the Underwater Coastal and Reef Clean – Up Activity of our local Police under the Leadership of PSSTUPT Mariano Paez Natu – el Jr. on Sunday July 19, 2009.
The month of August was crowned with a fellowship at Kontiki Maribago, having Prof. Avidor Abelson from the University of Tel Aviv Israel as Guest Speaker, Topics on coral reef conservation, restorations and sustainable marine related activities on August 08, 2009. Also FC Jun Avecilla, FVC Max Tan and FS Obet Del Rosario were guests of our Squadron. Our Membership did rise to 22 Members transforming our Squadron into a Fleet. 7 Members were inducted at the evening by FC Jun. The Following day we had a Boating Fellowship together with Prof. “Avi” and our guests from the Cubao Fleet.
On September 02, 2009 Mariner David Poley with Spouse Ethel and SQVC Udo Pelkowski did visit the 25th Handover and Induction Ceremony of the Rotary Club of Cubao West Rotary District 3780. The presence of IYFR was everywhere to be seen, friendship to the Members of the Cubao Fleet and the visiting Rotarians was made. Thanks to Pres. Jun Avecilla of RC Cubao West, who holds these RY two positions one as Club President and one as Fleet Commodore.
One new member signed up lifting our Membership to 23. On Sunday September 27, 2009 our Cebu Squadron is the Lead Club of Districts 3860 support to the Clean – Up the World Activity 2009, with a coastal clean – up in front of Brgy. San Vincente, Olongo Island. Due to the Alay Lakad Festivity on Sunday September 20, 2009 the Clean – Up was moved.
Our Fleet becomes duly chartered on March 13, 2010 by IC Terry Stretton who has chartered the first Cubao Fleet. He will come together with his First Mate Meryl.
